Inquiry for Teaching and Learning Workshop Series

Inquiry Teaching and Learning

We offer professional development in inquiry-based learning and teaching by providing a series of week-long immersion workshops, as well as an annual two day follow-up conference. The Introduction to Inquiry Workshop, Classroom Application Workshop, Formative Assessment Workshop and the Annual Follow Up Conference constitute our Inquiry for Teaching and Learning workshop series.

Introduction to Inquiry

The Connecticut Science Center’s Inquiry for Teaching and Learning Workshop Series was launched in the summer of 2005 and funded by the GE Education Foundation. Based upon the Exploratorium’s “Institute for Inquiry” in San Francisco, our Science Center’s Introduction to Inquiry professional development workshop is a five day immersion experience in inquiry-based learning and teaching plus an additional two days at the Annual Follow Up Conference.

The Center’s Introduction to Inquiry workshop is tied directly to the CT Science Framework Connecticut adopted in 2004. The workshop’s programming addresses requirements in Connecticut’s Common Core of Teaching and Common Core of Learning as well.

Annual Two Day Follow Up Conference

The Connecticut Science Center’s Inquiry for Teaching and Learning workshop series is committed to the philosophy that professional development is a continuous process rather than a one week event. To this end, we have support offerings during the school year and a Two Day Follow Up Workshop at the end of each school year.

The Two Day Follow Up Conference is a critical piece of your development and is mandatory to each phase of the series. At this annual conference, all participants from each year of the series come together to present and share what they have implemented throughout the year.

Our overall inquiry professional development program applies the inquiry learning model learned in the Introduction to Inquiry workshop. Using the model of the 3 stages of inquiry learning (below), the Introduction to Inquiry workshop week you attended was the inquiry starter, where you raised questions about using inquiry in your practice (as teacher, administrator or otherwise). At the end of the week you may have developed a plan (a classroom inquiry or set of ideas) to implement or investigate in your practice. This was getting into the second stage; focused investigation.

The Two Day Follow Up Workshop will be your opportunity for Shared Understanding. This means a focus on sharing out your experience with inquiry learning in your practice and an overall synthesis by facilitators.

It’s time for us to get back together to share out our findings!
