Mandell Academy for Teachers

Presenting the Joyce D. and Andrew J. Mandell Academy for Teachers at the Connecticut Science Center: Excellence in Teaching that leads to Student Achievement

The Joyce D. and Andrew J. Mandell Academy for Teachers is the Connecticut Science Center’s high-impact professional development program for educators. High-quality teachers are at the core of student achievement. They must provide our children with the skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) that have become essential to understanding global issues and building successful careers. The Joyce D. and Andrew J. Mandell Academy for Teachers is committed to supplying educators with professional development experiences that support rigorous science and curriculum standards. Mandell Academy for Teachers programs transform classroom instruction, resulting in engaging learning experiences that lead to achievement for all students.

The Mandell Academy for Teachers offers Student Engagement Strategies, Inquiry for Teaching and Learning, STEM Education Units, Science Content Workshops, Engineering Practices, and Science Coaching. Through our accreditation by Charter Oak State College, participants in our Inquiry for Teaching and Learning series earn graduate credit (3 credits per year for 3 years) toward a master’s degree.

Professional Development Workshops

The following categories represent the various types of workshops we offer. It is recommended that teachers planning a field trip to the Science Center first attend one of our professional development workshops designed especially for field trip visits.

Engineering is Elementary® Workshops

Engineering is Elementary® Workshops

Engineering is Elementary® (EiE®) is an award-winning, classroom-tested curriculum that integrates engineering and technology with science, language arts, social studies, and math via storybooks and hands-on design activities for 1st through 5th graders. The Connecticut Science Center is the state’s official professional development (PD) provider for EiE, a nationally renowned education project developed by the National Center for Technological Literacy® (NCTL®) at the Museum of Science, Boston.

Field Trip Workshops

Field Trip/Content Workshops

These workshops are opportunities for teachers to learn about the field trip programs offered at the Science Center and the pre and post-visit materials that are available for classroom use. These resources compliment the exhibit experiences and align with the Connecticut State Science Framework Standards.

STEM Unit Workshops

STEM Unit Workshops for Grades 6-8

These two-day workshops will immerse participants in our newly developed STEM units. These units have been designed to be taught through the engineering model based on the new national science standards and also align with the current science standards.

Inquiry Teaching and Learning

Inquiry for Teaching and Learning
Series

We offer professional development in Inquiry-based learning and teaching by providing a series of week-long immersion workshops, as well as an annual two-day follow-up conference. The Introduction to Inquiry Workshop, Classroom Application Workshop, Formative Assessment Workshop and the Annual Follow Up Conference constitute our Inquiry for Teaching and Learning series.

Physical Science Content Workshops

Physical Science Content Workshops

These are week-long workshops dealing with the underlying scientific principles behind the content standards in the CT Science Framework. Participants will be taught through the Inquiry method. The goal of these workshops is to help participants deepen their understanding of these scientific principles through Inquiry.

Integrating Science Workshops

Integrating Science Workshops

These workshops will introduce participants to the ways science can be integrated with other subject areas.
