A River of Life -
Naming Opportunities

Through interactive exhibits and wet labs, explore the Connecticut River, the stories of its past, ways we study and understand it in the present, and how we can maintain the life of the river in the future. The Connecticut River is an ever-changing ecosystem whose health can be assessed by monitoring its biological, chemical and physical makeup. Join us as we embark on a virtual journey through the life of the river.

CT River Overlook - Pending

CT River OverlookThe Overlook Balcony, spanning the East-facing overlook, is one of the most unique features of the Science Center. Projecting from the side of the building, this glass space provides direct views of the Connecticut River and its environs, where visitors can observe the changing Connecticut River landscape using binoculars and field guides.

Interpretive graphics displayed on the counter and window point out landmarks and describe their connection to the river. Visitors can write their own observations, and the most interesting will be posted.

The River Over Time

CT River Over TimeAn oversized fiberglass book lies on a tilted lectern in a darkened room. Images are projected onto the open pages by a suspended video projector.

Visitors explore the history of the Connecticut River through a touch-sensitive investigation of the animated book.  Visitors trigger audio/visual sequences that reveal hidden histories of Connecticut landmarks and learn about five different eras (Ice Age, Colonial Period, Early Industrial, Flood of 1936 and present day),  and the following themes: industry, river navigation, food, pollution, energy and kinds of people/personal stories.

Home on the River

Home on the RiverThe Connecticut River is a unique habitat for a diverse range of species. Understanding and caring for this ecosystem will ensure the future of  these species.

In a wall-sized cabinet, visitors can take a close look at animals and plants sustained by the  Connecticut River, and take an active role in identifying tank inhabitants.

A River Journey

A River JourneyTake a journey up and down the entire length of the Connecticut River. Exclusive video, shot by helicopter from approximately 100' above the river, can be searched by visitors using a spin browser and a 42” screen.

By turning the browser forward or backward, visitors can jump to points of interest in the video footage. As they travel, sounds of different areas of the Connecticut River watershed can be heard (wildlife, factories, boaters). A dozen landmarks highlighted within the video offer deeper content via pop-ups.
