Electrodermal Biofeedback
Research is currently being done to show the benefits of being aware of your own mental attitude while playing sports. Through the use of electrodermal response (EDR) biofeedback strategies scientists can actually hear thoughts when someone is put through a simulated, stress-filled, sports-related situation.
Researchers at San Francisco State University have hooked subjects up to an EDR feedback device and told them to think about performing a routine, such as gymnastics. Subjects were then informed they had blown their routine. Whenever the person thought of an anxiety-provoking situation, the pitch of the feedback from the EDR device increased. This helped the individual recognize negative thoughts and helped reconstruct their self-talk to more positive and beneficial thoughts.
