Picture of Health

When it comes to our health, the choices are dizzying. You've got your low-carb, high-protein, toxin-cleansing diet regimens. Those are followed by your hot yoga, power-spinning, strength-training workouts. This exhibit promotes an understanding of the latest research and technological advances so you can more easily distinguish between bad health habits and good ones that will truly better the quality of your life.

Life Span

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions. Make the right ones in this virtual game and you'll live to a ripe old age. Make the wrong ones and… well… you might want to look into some extra life insurance. Basically, you sweep virtual game pieces with plus and minus year values into your area. In the end, you'll come away with a better understanding of how your lifestyle can affect your personal health.

“Esther” Eats

“Esther” is a fictional character who will eat pretty much anything – anything you feed her, that is. By slipping special “pucks” of food items into Esther's mouth and then watching a monitor over her stomach, you'll be able to check out different aspects of each food item she digests, such as caloric intake and nutrients. Sure hope she's not real enough to develop gas.

Nice Genes

Inheriting your mom's eyes and your dad's hair? Okay. Inheriting your rich uncle's estate? More than okay. Inheriting the potential for illness and disease? Not so okay. But what can we do? In this exhibit, visitors choose cards featuring portraits of characters. At different stations, you insert your character's card into devices that feed back information about family histories and genetic codes. By better understanding how these codes operate, we may be able to better identify, treat and control certain diseases and make healthier lifestyle choices.

People With Prosthetics

Watch and listen to people with prosthetics tell their personal stories about overcoming challenges and gaining respect. Their interviews reveal how technological advances have changed their lives. Visitors can even examine actual examples of prosthetic devices, to gain appreciation for its technological ingenuity and the person's use of it.
